What happened this week at the National Bishops’ Conference?

Before the bishops could vote on measures aimed at addressing the most recent abuse crisis, the Vatican insisted the the measures be tabled. So what exactly happened, and what’s next for the American Church? Bishop Wall appeared this week on two programs to give his thoughts on the sudden changes at the meeting, telling one host “In 2018, there’s a bit of a reckoning, and I think this is about Bishops, and rightfully so.”

“Let’s Talk Accountability and Healing in the NM Catholic Church”

Our Victims Assistance Coordinator Elizabeth Terrill, who works with survivors of abuse to get them access to resources and counseling services, was a guest this week on a KUNM Radio show about the abuse crisis in New Mexico.

We appreciate the opportunity to come on the show, but we also wanted to express a heartfelt thank you to the survivors who called in to share their stories.

Diocesan priest delivers keynote address as event honoring Catholic medical professionals

You could call Fr. Peter Short, pastor of the parishes in Winslow, AZ, somewhat of an expert on Humanae Vitae. Fr. Peter has given many talks on Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on human life, marriage, and sexuality. Recently, he was the keynote speaker at a Phoenix event honoring medical professionals and a doctor whose pro-life actions cost her a job.

Sr. Zoe Brenner, “Just doing what God calls her to do”

“In describing her ministry to the Navajo people, Sister of the Blessed Sacrament Zoe Brenner simply said, “I’m just doing what God is calling me to do.

“For the past eight years, she has been involved in pastoral ministry, primarily at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Ft. Defiance, and St. Berard in Navajo, N.M., both in the Diocese of Gallup.

“She has been inspired by the memory of Sister Marguerite Bartz, who was murdered on the Navajo reservation in 2009. “I saw what she was doing — being with the people, strengthening their faith, helping them to become devoted Catholics,” Sister Zoe explained.”
